This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in a large city in Missouri and come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. We strive to provide our students with a rich and engaging curriculum that emphasizes community and leadership. I want our classroom to feel like the home away from home for my students. Our school is very much a community. There are about 400 students in our school in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Education is very important to the families at our school. They chose our school, a neighborhood charter school, because of its diversity, high standards, and excellent instruction.
My Project
For the beginning of the year, I want the students to have a wonderful reading nook that they can use during "Concentrate on Literacy Time" (COLT). During COLT time, students can read any book that interests them and they LOVE graphic novels. Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. It is my goal to foster a lifelong love for reading that will stay with my students as they move through higher grade levels. The rug will create a more homey feeling and give the students a nice place to relax. We will also have our morning meeting in the nook and the calender and organizer will be a place for them to reference throughout the day. In order to foster that love for learning through reading, I need to create the ultimate cozy reading nook That's where you come in!
