Starting the Year Off Prepared to Take on the World!

My students need to start the year off right with all the supplies (notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, scissors and erasers, etc.) they need as many of my students will show up on the first day empty handed.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach third grade in a small, suburban school that is part of a small, underfunded district. My students actually live pretty far from our school in a group of low-income apartments. Many of my students come from broken homes and often return to an empty apartment at the end of the school day. For many, school is the safest, most comfortable place they will be from day to day. Many come to school hungry for a free meal, with no supplies of their own.

This year we face a new hurdle to overcome, with many of my students having lost homes, vehicles and possessions in the devastation of Harvey.

Despite everything, my students come to school with smiles on their faces and determination in their hearts.

It is my goal to provide them with a chance at something better, to instill in them the tools for success in school and beyond. I want to expose them to the world they can be part of with a little effort and determination. I hope to give them to confidence and awareness that they can be whatever they set their minds to.

My Project

Because this year will only be my second full year teaching, I have not acquired a stock pile of extra supplies.

Last year only about half of my students came with a full set of supplies and, as a team, my threw all the supplies together and became very creative in splitting up what we had to work with.

In order to start the year off right my students need supplies including composition notebooks, pencils, glue sticks, scissors and erasers to complete daily lessons and activities.

Our classroom needs lined chart paper for anchor charts and group projects as well as a wire organizer to keep all of our journals and supplies organized.

Additionally, the education environment has become more and more technology based and our classroom needs some extra mice and headphones so that each chrome book may be used for testing, daily grades, and practice, while not distracting other students.

With this kind of a start, our year is sure to be a success!
