Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low-income/high poverty area, and many of them are from immigrant families. These student are often in charge of taking care of their younger siblings and have more responsibilities than your average middle school student. They face challenges both in and outside of school. Many of them do not have technology in their households to meet the needs of the ever evolving classroom and world around them. That being said, they are still a huge inspiration to me every day. Because of my students, I am learning to be more patient, to be kind, selfless, and composed.
Given their lives outside of school, I want my classroom to be a safe space.
My goal as an educator is to make the classroom an accepting community where everyone feels like they belong and can learn to their fullest potential. In order to start next year off on the right foot and have all the essential tools for a positive classroom space with routines, and expectations in place, I want to add new resources to my teacher toolbox!
My Project
I am the type of educator who is always looking for the best way to serve my students. I want my classroom to be a safe space where students love learning.
As I prepare for next year, where my class sizes will be larger and I will need to hone my classroom management skills, I realize I need to adapt with my students.
I am looking for a rain stick to help transition students in my class without having to yell over them. I am looking for a cellphone pocket chart to limit student distractions with technology--with this I plan to implement a point system that earns the class rewards (hence the raffle tickets). I am looking for hanging folders to keep extra copies of work so students can get make up assignments easily. I am looking for chart paper to make my teaching more visual and interactive for the students.
Together, all these materials will help me be a better teacher and provide a safe learning environment for all of my students.
