Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm a teacher in a Title One school, in an area where my kids face a lot of obstacles at home and at school. Many of my students are English language learners. A majority of my students also receive free or reduced-price lunch.
I call my mom and dad on my way to school every day, and my mom always ends our call by saying, "Okay, love those kids today!" I take this to heart because I know that my students come into my classroom with many needs and worries on their minds.
My goal every day is to give them to freedom to just be kids when they are in my room.
My students are fun-loving, gregarious, kind and curious. Not a day goes by that one of my students doesn't manage to blow me away with some new creative idea or hilarious commentary on a lesson. I want the absolute best for my students and I am hoping that I can achieve that goal in part by posting projects here on Donors Choose.
My Project
The 2018-2019 school year will be my third year of teaching, and it will hopefully be the first year that is not kicked off by me roaming the aisles of office supply stores, loading up on supplies that I know my students will not have in their backpacks. The past two years, I have sent home supply lists at Back to School night and I have urged parents to send in extra supplies for students who might show up with little to nothing. Each year, some students have had some of the supplies, but no one has been fully equipped and ready to learn, so I fill in the gaps.
The truth of the matter is that more than three-quarters of the students at my school are from low-income households, and they need all of the support that they can get.
By donating to this project, you will help my students feel supported, prepared, and excited to kick off the school year.
Your donation will fund basic school supplies such as folders, pencils, and scissors that will allow my students to stay organized and feel prepared for all of our assignments. Binder organizers will help them to keep track of their work, pencil cases will keep their desks neat (and keep us from losing pencils!), and craft supplies will make publishing their work and participating in math and science activities a cinch!
