This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a wonderful group of 2nd graders. They attend an urban school where 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day to day lives.
There are many single income families, families that are receiving assistance in one form or another, and families that are or were homeless at one time.
Regardless of the challenges these students face, they always come to school with a smile on their face. They are eager to learn and when given an even playing field, they are capable of great things! I want to help even the field for them and their education.
My Project
In our school we do not have a library that the students can check out books from to use and share at home. In order for my students to share their growing reading skills, my students will decorate the large plastic envelopes with the foam stickers I have requested and use them to take home different leveled books from our class library to practice their reading skills with their family. The envelopes will be used throughout the year as a safe way to transport the materials to and from school as many of my students do not bring or have a backpack.
At the beginning of the year we do many activities to promote friendship and kindness so that the students understand they all may be different but are also alike.
My students will use the variety of beads requested to create friendship bracelets for each other based on their unique characteristics. The students keep the bracelets all year and treasure the act of kindness from their knew friend that they have learned so much about.
