Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher who spent most of this school year teaching literacy to children who do not read outside of school. One of the reasons this happens is because most of these children live in homes where there are no books! There are no family trips to the library or bookstore. There are no bedtime stories. After all the progress my students have made this year, we are now facing a two-month stretch where they will not be reading at all. My goal is to keep the momentum of the school year going by helping my students to start their summer reading lists before the school year ends. I want to get them excited about reading this summer by taking them to Barnes and Noble to shop for books that they can and will read (and re-read!). I am hopeful that as a result of this trip my students will not only find great books to read, but that they will also find out that the bookstore (and the library) can be a great place to spend time during those hot summer months. Reading over the summer will give them a great head start in sixth grade; filling their homes with books will give them a great head start in life.
