My students need composition books, pencils, index card rings,glue sticks,index cards,chart paper pads,binders,sheet protectors,pencil grips,and erasers to start the year.
Do you remember starting your first day of school?! You would come in with all your supplies. You were excited about making new friends and meeting your teacher. My students come in every year excited but lacking essential resources to make it through the year.
I am a 3rd and 4th grade special education teacher in East Harlem, NY in a high needs school.
The students I teach are mostly African American/Black and Hispanic/Latino who live in a high poverty neighborhood. They are mostly English language learners who are very motivated to work and achieve to the best of their abilities. The students I have encountered throughout my years of teaching and the ones I'm hoping to have this upcoming school year have a lot of talents ranging from strong mathematical skills to a love for the arts.
My Project
I've requested composition books,pencils,index cards, binders, glue sticks,chart paper,index card rings,pencil grips and erasers in order to begin the school year. Every year, I find myself frustrated over the amount of resources that are quickly burned through in my classroom; like the basic resources I wish to keep in my classroom year around, such as pencils.
I'm a big advocate for teaching students how to write well. The cost of composition notebooks can be hard for some of my students families. I want to keep notebooks in the classroom so they can continue to write and express themselves as maturing authors. I want my students this year to be able to keep a growing list of new vocabulary words easily on a ring of index cards; hopefully this will propel their writing craft to new heights.
The other resources I'm requesting are tools needed to teach effectively. My students and all students deserve to have materials presented to them in a organized and efficient manner.
With the help of your donations, myself and my students will be able to start the school year with a sufficient amount of supplies.
These supplies will start the school year off on the right foot, which will help set of the tone for a great, well supplied school year.
