Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Indian Peaks is a Title I school in Longmont, CO. Over 90% of our students are on free-and-reduced lunch and come from a high-risk, low socio-economic background.
Most of my students would never get to have their own pianos to play on.
Music is a place where we can give the unheard voices of our student's a chance to come out and be expressed. This expression takes many forms and I believe it is imperative to provide as many experiences and opportunities as possible to let that voice be heard!
We are fortunate enough to have one keyboard and one upright piano but, unfortunately, that does not engage all students at once. Having a set of keyboards, headphones, and splitters will increase engagement in the students and allow them all to not only explore, create, and perform music but also share it in a positive and safe learning environment where the students can easily listen to each other.
My Project
Volume 2 of this project involves getting pianos and related equipment into our music room. Students would get to learn how to care for, treat, and play this wonderful music instrument. My students will be able to get to learn about music from a wide variety of times, composers, styles, etc.
With the Modern Band approach, I can help provide music that is more connected to the students and their lives!
Each student will have an opportunity to play the piano through volume 2 of this project. Piano is a great, accessible instrument and this project will allow ALL students to be involved simultaneously so they can each get into their own music.
By providing the students with early experiences on these instruments, and giving them an inviting quality music program to work with, students can not only become more engaged in the instrument itself and the music around them, they are going to love being in school and enjoy the positive atmosphere that the music program can bring to them, as many music programs everywhere in the nation do!
