As the band teacher at my school, I am always looking for new ways to reach students and help them learn through non-traditional means. One of the biggest successes came by accident last year when I brought my African drums to school and allowed the kids to play. The students loved it so much that I incorporated it into part of the curriculum, and will continue to use it in the 2005-2006 school year an after-school activity. The students immediately grew, not only musically, but emotionally and creatively as well. In a drum circle, students learn to work as a team, learning basic rhythms and expanding upon them. As the listen, they pick up on the subtle nuances and the music they create morphs into an entirely new work. The difficulty and intricacies of the music only improves their creative ability, and they open up to try new things in the process. Middle school student often have difficulty expressing their emotions, and this was a wonderful way for them to burst out of their bubble. Additionally, students who previously had discipline issues had an outlet to express their frustration, and work with it in a form of communication that they could appreciate- music! My request is for six additional djembes (a type of African drum) so that I can include more students into the circle. Currently, using a wide variety of drums, I can include about 10 students. An additional six would bring in more students who could otherwise not afford this type of drum.
