Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Humanities teacher at Fannie Lou Hamer High School. Our school has been teaching "at-risk" students in a successful learning environment for 10 years. High percentages of our students enter high school performing below state averages in math and reading, but leave our school admitted to city and state colleges. In our Humanities class, we spend much time exploring who we are as writers and thinkers. I want students to take on the role of writer and artist and to publish their work. Studies of student writing constantly focus on the power of publishing. Publishing is what gives writing energy, purpose, and power. Publishing inspires students to see their work as 'real' and encourages others to join the process of creation. Working with another teacher at my school, I have started a Literary Magazine. The students in my 9th and 10th grade classes are already enthusiastic poets and writers, and this magazine provides them with a space for creation and an opportunity for leadership. Students have helped choosing pieces and create the layout and focus of each magazine. We would like the magazine to publish twice a year. We would like to include art, photography, and critical reviews as a way of showing the versatility and range of artistic inspirations. To accomplish these goals, we will need a scanner to include original artwork in our magazine. Our students and school will become richer and more alive with the infusion of this literary and artistic outlet.
