Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students in the functional skills program range in age from 14-22 and present with a diagnosed intellectual disabilities similar to moderate cognitive impairments. They travel to and from high school with door to door transportation; due to their cognitive limitations, and the dangerous risks involved in traveling across the city via public transportation.
We aspire to teach our students the necessary adaptive life skills to be happy, successful, and contributing members of society.
They become "employees" in the school run Copy Center. They work recycling within the school. We are located close in proximity to a local hospital where they work as greeters.
Academically, it is vital for our students to gain the knowledge needed to be successful active members in society. They need to be able to access public transportation, make the appropriate change at a store, and to request help or clarification. Ideally, it would be wonderful if they could access the digital world in areas other than social media.
My Project
My classroom teaches ELA skills to students with cognitive disabilities. Since we are in a high school, it can be difficult to find books in the building that are at an appropriate reading level for my students. My students are motivated to read and to develop reading skills, but currently have limited options when it comes to accessible books.
My students are in need of motivating reading materials that they can access independently.
The books will be accessible at all times for my students. They can use them during free time, or during class assignments. Having reading materials that students are motivated to read can go a long way to increasing their skills. My students will WANT to practice their reading skills with these books.
