My students need graduated cylinders and balances for use in science class!
My students are in an inner city school. Most never get to leave our city, but that does not mean that they cannot experience the wonders of science and nature going on around them. I take them on 8 field trips a year - not 'museums with a worksheet' type trips, but real field experiences. I want to give them as many real world experiences as possible to show them that science is a whole lot more than fill-in-the-blank worksheets and canned labs!
Though they may live in public housing, they are eager to learn and better themselves.
They simply need a little help with resources. I have had kids ask me if they could do work in my classroom to pay for their spot on a trip. They don't have the money for expensive scientific calculators, so I have cobbled together a set of 15 that they can check out. Not just for my class, but for any class and for SAT testing. They take great care of them. My kids strive for a better life.
Imagine trying to "do" science with broken and outdated equipment. Chipped glasswear, balances that are older than your are and that no longer...balance. How can a student learn about basic science concepts with little more than paper and pencils. But, our school has no money to replace our ancient equipment.
My students need triple beam balances and graduated cylinders so that they can DO science!
Density is a topic that tortures students simply because that have never wrestled with it. They need to get their hands on liquids and solids of different densities so that they can truly understand this concept. The balances and cylinders are the best tools to start with.
From there, they can use these items to explore the properties of rocks and minerals, which will then take them into the concepts of plate tectonics, bouyancy, thermohaline conveyor belts, atmospheric interactions and convection currents. But, they need a way to start understanding the physical properties of matter that produce the interactions of land, sea and air.
