My class is composed of children who are diverse in many aspects of life, including their social and economic backgrounds.
Our classroom is a place where they come together to build a community where everyone feels safe and valued, regardless of their differences.
Within this community, my students are engaged in activities that are hands-on and based on their interests and needs. For many of my students, my classroom is their first introduction into a formal school setting. My hope for my students is that they will leave my classroom with a love for learning, and will be excited about the rest of their journey through school!
My Project
In our classroom, we use tempera paints, watercolors, and various types of paper as a part of our units of study, as well as, everyday during morning tubs or free choice center time.
Our school is an Oklahoma A+ school, which means that every teacher integrates the arts into their curriculum.
Before the year started, I was hesitant about how I was going to integrate art into my classroom, but I have found that it is one of my favorite things to do with my kids! I love seeing their creativity and the different ways that they express their personality through their art work.
Using these materials, we will complete a variety of projects. Some examples are a watercolor alphabet that we will hang up in our classroom for the entirety of our year together. We will use these paints and paper to complete a variety of studies over illustrators and artists such as, Georgia O'Keefe, Andy Warhol, David Shannon, Eric Carle, Frida Kahlo, and more. We will study the signature styles of each of these artists, and then use what we have learned to create our own art in their style. Students will also be creating self-portraits once a quarter as a way to document their development throughout the year, each in the style of a different artist. I can't wait to see all of the incredible things my students create with these supplies!
