My Students

Your donation could help students bring their ideas to life! I currently teach art at a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school in a high-needs community in New York. Our school provides free lunches to 100 percent of our student body.

My students are creative and bursting with ideas.

Unfortunately, my supply closet is not bursting. I see around 600 K-5th graders a week; they receive art once a week with me during 45 minute classes. My children love to create art and get excited each time I bring out a new material for them to try. Many students do not get the opportunity to make, or look at, art outside of school, so the time they have in my room is extremely special to them. I make sure that every student that comes to my room is exposed to a wide variety of mediums (painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, sculpture, etc.), as well as materials (tempera paint, clay, oil pastels, etc.). My students learn best through exploration and their own discoveries with art materials (instead of step-by-step instruction), so offering them a wide variety of quality supplies to explore and experiment with is very important.

My Project

I have learned, over the past four years of my teaching career, that having the right tools and materials makes a big difference in the quality of art my students can create; it also sets them up for success. I used to have children create art on 60lb paper for example, but the paint and glue we use makes the paper sag, which causes holes to form. For this reason, I have realized that quality art materials are necessary for making great art! I am asking for 80lb paper to hold up to all of the materials we use (glue, paint, etc.). I am also asking for good erasers that do not leave black smudges (like our current ones do) on students' drawings. For my collage projects, I am asking for paper that has various designs on it so that I can discuss texture and pattern with students, and so that their ideas can "pop!" and come to life. Finally, I am asking for oil pastels with a variety of colors for children to manipulate and explore in their drawings.

Learning about and making art is important in the lives of my students.

It gives them a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. My lessons focus on student-guided learning through the exploration of materials; if the materials they are exploring aren't very good, the possibility for exploration (and ultimately learning) is limited. Please help my artists make their ideas come to life successfully and with as much discovery and learning as possible by funding my project! Thank you!!!
