Start Our PreK Day With Activities for Self-Regulation!
Help me give my students the ability to self-regulate at the beginning of their day with the edx Education Step-a-Logs - Balance Beam for Kids, the little dove wood balance board, and Little Dynamo Balance Stepping Stones.
Our PreK students are curious, creative, and energetic four and five-year-olds! Our school is located on the east side of St. Paul, MN, where one hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Ninety-five percent of our students are children of color. Most of our students have difficulty getting their basic needs met, much less have money for the extras. We are an inclusive setting where two-thirds of our students are typically developing and one-third have special needs like developmental delays and autism.
My Project
These materials and equipment will allow my general and special education PreK students to start their day off right! Before they enter the classroom, the student will embark on a gross motor sensory walk. They will encounter activities to engage their minds and bodies while practicing their balance, experiencing new tactile textures, direction following, eye/foot and eye/hand coordination, and crossing midline/body awareness. The sensory walk will be taught to the students so that they are eventually able to be self-directed and do it independently. The sensory path will benefit all children in the classroom by allowing them to make a positive transition from sometimes chaotic homes to our fun and safe school environment.
