My students need art supplies and basic classroom supplies to start the year off well. The school provides us with the bare minimum of supplies; we need access to more materials to help facilitate learning. WE need pencils, erasers and more.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students from Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras) and Mexico. These students are called Newcomer students and have recently arrived in the US from their home country. Our school is divided into a regular high school program and a sheltered Newcomer program. Most of my students are English learners who speak Spanish or Mam.
Art projects and other activities that allow students to express themselves are great because of the trauma that students have experienced.
The school in general is part of the larger East Bay community. Many students in this area do not have budget for buying school supplies.
My Project
My students need to start off the school year with fun and engaging projects. Most projects will require basic materials that the school only provides in small quantities. Some of the first projects we work on involve re-activating prior knowledge by drawing life maps. These life maps require construction paper, tape/glue, markers, etc. In addition, we do a lot of games at the beginning of the year to make students feel comfortable and welcome. One of the games involves all students having white board markers.
We will start this year off by reading the book "House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros.
I would like to then explore the housing crisis in the Bay Area with students through project based learning. In order to facilitate project based learning, I would like all students to have the supplies they need to make posters, create visual representations of what they are learning, and be able to explore the surrounding neighborhoods.
Teaching ESL is a joy. Because of the tremendous need for visually engaging learning experiences, these supplies are necessary to help students draw, depict, paint, and create representations of the words and concepts they are learning. I will supplement these materials with photographs that I find in second hand stores, magazines and newspaper to cut images from, and videos/movies that will help them understand the language and culture of Oakland.
