Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth-grade students are eager to take control of their education. They come to school at 7:15 every morning and don't leave until 4. They are curious and dedicated, with a drive to understand, question, and create. They are kind curious and caring. They have a deep sense of community and take pride in their work. They are a joy to work with.
Statistically, 100% of my students are below the poverty line.
Some are homeless, some are in foster care, and some are newcomers to the country. The students and the staff are working long days, in an extended school year, to bring the school out of turnaround.
My Project
These materials will help my students have a classroom where they can flexibly move around, while also keeping track of their belongings. Gone are the days where students sit in rows; as students move from one group to another, they need a home base where they store all their materials. That is what the drawers are for. Within those drawers, students will file their folder for different subjects.
The caddies and the caddie bookshelf will be another way that students store their belongings.
They need spaces to store their independent reading books, book club books, and whole-group books. These two systems- the drawers, and the shelves will be critical in establishing a classroom where students are free to move around with purpose.
