Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading biographies and stories about artists is part of the VAPA standards in California. With little resources for funding books these days, I would like to provide biographies about artists such as Renoir, Picasso, Degas, Matisse and Cezanne for my students.
My 5th grade students are from a low income area of Southern California.
Over 85% of my students are classified as English Language Learners and over 97% of them are qualified for the free and reduced lunch program.
I have been teaching at the same school for 13 years now and have seen a change in the amount of funding school have been given during that time. With the help of the Disney CREATE grant, my 5th grade students will have an opportunity to increase their artistic knowledge this school year.
At our school, we do not have funding for an art program and the homeroom teacher is solely responsible for teaching those art standards, so I am always looking for opportunities to give my students instruction in art.
My Project
Our Title I school has its share of challenges, but despite this, I would like to be able to provide book filled with information about famous artists. I would like to provide my students an opportunity to be successful at one of the Visual and Performing Arts Standards which states that students will, "Read biographies and stories about artists and summarize the readings in short reports,
telling how the artists mirrored or affected their time period or culture." With the generous donations from the Disney CREATE grant, and private donors, I would like to fill our classroom library with many biographies about artists. My students will be able to read the biographies and then summarize these books by creating short reports. The reports will be completed in the third trimester and shared with the parents at Open House in June 2014.
With so much emphasis on language arts and math are our school, it would be nice to provide an opportunity for students to research such famous artists such as Monet, Cezanne, Degas, Picasso, Van Gogh and Renoir.
Each of the biographies I am requesting will help allow my students to meet the California state standard. Thank you for considering my project!
