Eighth graders- you either love them or you hate them. I love them! I love their wit, their awkwardness, their need to be treated like an adult, and their inner child that isn't ready to be an adult quite yet.
At an age where they are growing rapidly, both physically and academically, we need to create an environment that allows them to spread out, work together, and love what they're doing in the classroom.
This generation's immersion in technology makes it difficult to keep their attention and interest without a screen in front of them. We need to pull out all the stops to create a comfortable, engaging environment that gets them away from the distraction of all the internet has to offer and back to a love of reading and working together to solve problems.
My Project
Giving my students flexible seating options allows them to take charge of their learning and and make the best choices for what works for them.
It is ironic that kindergarten classes have large spaces and options for small students, but our biggest students seem to get the least options and smallest spaces.
We would never accept plastic chairs and lap height desks in the workplace as the most effective way to work and collaborate. We would never sit at one in our homes to get comfortable and read a good book. Yet we expect out students to do just that. Dreamworks Animations and Google recognize that creativity, collaboration, and worker productivity increase when flexible seating is an option. I'd like to give my students the same advantage.
