My Students

You are seven years old and walk into your new second grade classroom. Your teacher has assigned you a desk, where you are expected to stay put for the next 180 days. You are uncomfortable, fidgety, and unable to express your voice. You are confined to a space that restricts your ability to be your best self.

My students are creative, active, hands-on learners and they should not be confined to uncomfortable, assigned seats in our classroom.

Instead, I envision a safe place for students of all abilities to be able to work to their full potential. Of my 21 second graders, I have several with sensory needs on Individualized Educational Programs. Many of my students are pulled out of the classroom for Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Skills and Peer Relations, Special Education, Reading Support, and Speech and Language Therapy. I have a part-time Title 1 Tutor who does push-in service with nine of my students for Reading and Math. My students need a space to cater to their varying learning styles and needs.

My Project

Say goodbye to your traditional rows of desks. When I welcome my 21 second graders into our classroom each day, they will each have a choice of where they will work with a variety of seating options. Fidgety students may choose a wobble stool or a chair with a rubber band, or even a yoga ball. Some may prefer to work at the low table with a stadium seat or cushion. Others may want to kick back and relax on a bean bag in the reading nook. Wherever they choose, flexible seating will enhance our classroom culture in a positive way.

With your help, our classroom will take on the relaxing, comfortable vibe of a Starbucks lounge, but with a second grade twist.

Children will finally be able to have a choice of where they work best to help them reach their fullest potential.
