My Students

Our students attend a small, rural school with an enrollment of 380 students in grades 9-12. Because funding is limited, our students have not had access to some of the resources in larger districts. Our students depend on resources in our school, and our collection of library books needs to be updated to provide resources to appeal to diverse interests. We are implementing independent reading time as a part of our English curriculum, and students need access to high interest books to foster a life-long love of reading.

My Project

My students need additional high interest reading material in our library because many of our students say they do not like to read. The books requested in this project would help provide students with books on a variety of topics. Students who do not like to read have simply not found the right books on their interest and ability levels. This project would help provide more choices for students with high-interest books. We are also using an incentive approach to encourage reading for pleasure. Students who read books, in addition to their required classroom reading, will be able to visit our "Star Books Café" to read, relax, and enjoy cappuccino. We hope that the additional reading material will encourage more of our students to read "a-latte."
