Stanley's Adventures Need a New Ticket

Help me give my students the opportunity to read the book Flat Stanley! For our Learning Fair, students create a Flat Stanley, mail it to family or friends to take photos, and create a poster about Stanley's adventures!

My Students

My students are very enthusiastic learners! They become excited and eager to try new projects. I have some students who are learning English. The majority of them speak English. I have 30 students.

These students are such a pleasure to encounter.

They are well-mannered and very honest! I engage them in conversation easily when we are talking about their pets and their families. They enjoy hearing about my cats. I have several students that love to tell me a story about their pets on a daily basis. Being with these students make me so happy!

Working on projects is their favorite thing to do. They love creating and brainstorming ideas. Students beam with pride when explaining their projects to the class. It really is a heart-warming experience to be a part of that!

My Project

In the book Flat Stanley, Stanley becomes flat by a bulletin board falling on him. His dad sends him to California for a vacation in an envelope to visit friends. As a class, we read this book, and then the students talk to their families about where to send "their" Flat Stanley. The students politely ask the letter recipient to take Stanley on adventures and take photos of what he does and where he goes.

Letter writing skills and geography skills are practiced.

How the postal system works is discussed. We bring out the map and point out where each student is sending his/her Flat Stanley. Creativity and writing are needed to create the poster and photo captions after the students receive the Stanley and photos. After the poster completion, each student proudly presents his/her project poster to the class. The posters are displayed in the school hallway during the Learning Fair for all to view!

Each year students look forward to this fun and educational project. Our current books have been lovingly used for many years and are very tattered and torn. New books would be the icing on the cake!
