My students are in 5th-8th grade band classes at our school. They give up their study hall time to come and make music with me everyday. I have a relatively large group of students who are in a variety of home environments. 51% of our students are "economically disadvantaged". Many of them are on free or reduced lunches and/or have difficulties succeeding in standard classrooms; for many of my students band class is the one class that makes them feel successful.
The students that these stands will help are some of the sweetest and most hardworking children I have ever encountered.
They go out of their way to have the best rehearsals possible. I have amazing leaders in every class, and they can even run their own rehearsals! I even have a large group of students that come to extra band rehearsals outside of school. I could not ask for more amazing students.
My Project
My students desperately need more music stands in our classroom. The stands we are looking at getting will be used by band and music students grades 5th-8th. We will also use them at District Wide events. These stands have the potential to help the students at our school to successfully play their music to the best of their abilities. I have included some student testimonies about the problems we are having with our equipment during our performances.
Student Quote, “The band room at Our Grade School is in need of stands.
We only have about 3 good stands; all the others tip over or the tops come off. During one of our concerts the Percussion had to hold their stands up with their hand while playing. We have other stands that the tops come off of and hit you in the face when you try to adjust them.”
I have put in for 18 music stands from Woodwind-Brasswind. It is not enough for the entire school, but it is a really good place to start. Any little bit would really help us out! My students have been excited for every concert we have had, but it is so heartbreaking to see them struggle due to malfunctioning equipment and insufficient funding.
