Ms. Larkin from Donaldsonville LA is requesting reading nooks, desks & storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need standing desks to accommodate their various learning styles and sizes so that they may participate in lessons to the best of their abilities.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students attend the only public high school in their small South Louisiana community. Most of them have known each other since birth, so it often feels like our hallways are a family gathering of sorts.
I like the way my students support and love each other like family- I once saw them split a small bag of chips 28 ways.
They consistently give each other feedback and keep each other on track. They show up to sporting events, parades, and other school and community events to show pride in their school and in each other.
Although they attend a Title I school where 100% of students receive free lunch, my students are strong-willed and full of energy. My goal as their teacher is to support a love of learning that measures up to their love of each other.
Studies have shown that working at a standing desk has many health benefits. Standing to work improves posture, which lessens back pain. Standing while working can also improve attention span and concentration. Many of my students have IEPs or behavior plans that call for preferential seating, but the standing desks I have requested will benefit all of my students in a variety of ways.
For example, a student with too much energy can stand and move more freely rather than feeling confined in a small desk.
This student can now channel their energy into healthy, on-task behaviors.
Another example is a student who is exhausted from taking care of siblings while parents work, studying, or extra-curricular activities. This student can stand up to boost their alertness and focus.
These standing desks are part of a larger project I am working on to accommodate my students' various learning styles and sizes. They will increase students' participation and other healthy behaviors and help to maximize learning.
