My students need risers and an adjustable computer desk to turn the existing desks in our classroom into standing desks. I feel this will help with some of the attention issues that my kiddos face.
I am a special education teacher at an elementary is Bartlesville, OK. This year, I am teaching grades PK to 5th. I have 30 total students, 18 of those are 4th and 5th grade.
The majority of my kiddos have a learning disability, and or, a diagnosis of ADHD that impairs their ability to learn.
All of my kids are unique and special, and with that, they all have unique ways in which they learn. I love my job and I love the students I work with. It can be challenging at times trying to figure out the way in which they learn best. However, it is extremely rewarding when we have a breakthrough and something clicks with them, or their scores improve. We love to celebrate successes in our room!
My Project
I want to try out the risers for our current desks and see how it helps. If they work, I would like to then pursue a bigger grant on getting actual standing desks. I also want to get a desk where I can make the computer a standing desk as well. It will be used by myself, as well as the students. If the kids are standing, I want to be standing too. I do not want them to think of this a punishment of some sorts. I want to model the behavior and show them that this is to help all of us to improve our attention, our posture, and our overall health.
Research has shown that sitting for six hours a day is equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes per day.
Other research has also shown that standing desks has improved attention for those students with ADHD. I would like this grant to try it out and see how the standing desks work. If they are successful, then I want to pursue a bigger grant for actual standing desks.
