I live to teach (and to read, truth be told). One of my greatest joys in life comes from watching student after student find a love of books during their time in my class. This happens every single year--actually, it happens every single day. Students arrive at my school, seeking a second chance for turning their lives around and getting back on track for graduation. Give me a year with them, and I watch them transform from shy, reluctant learners to forces of power to be reckoned with, to students who are no longer sitting by, passively waiting for life to happen. Rather, they begin creating their bright futures right in my classroom. Their past struggles of substance abuse, teen pregnancy, homelessness, extreme poverty, gang involvement, or severe social anxiety slowly becomes a mere shadow of who they are, empowering them to consider, instead, who they want to be--who they can be.
My Project
My 15-year-old classroom is currently filled with rows of desks like most classrooms have been for 100 years, and it's time for a change.
Learning should be active, engaging and full of movement--movement of both bodies and minds.
One at a time, I am hoping to begin moving out desks that force kids into robotic-like rows into seating and standing arrangements that will allow for more active learning and collaboration.
Donors from across the country have already begun the process of helping me transform my classroom, and I'm hoping that as long as I'm willing to reach out for help with change that my supporters will help me make this possible.
My goal is for students to walk into a classroom that provides a comfortable and welcoming learning environment each day. I am seeking support to purchase standing desks, which will allow students to work and learn on their feet rather than being confined only to a sitting position in hard, traditional desks. One desk at a time I want to re-create my classroom for a new generation of learners.
