I am a special education teacher who serves children with disabilities in grades 3-5. My goal is to give my students their best chance to rise above the challenges they face in order to achieve academically. My students come from an impoverished area of South Carolina, and they face challenges brought on by their learning disabilities and a lack of basic and necessary resources. Despite these challenges, my students are some of the most enthusiastic learners I have ever come in contact with. They never give up, even when the odds are stacked against them. These children are hungry for knowledge and eager to explore the world around them.
My Project
Flexible seating benefits my students for many reasons. First, seating options provide students with the opportunity to exercise voice and choice. Each student can determine which type learning environment will best meet his or her needs. Additionally, many of my students struggle to learn and behave throughout their school day due to ADHD and other behavioral issues. One study found that standing desks can lower feelings of stress and fatigue, while improving mood, productivity, focus, and energy levels. My students need standing desks to provide them with more flexible seating options. Standing desks provide a healthy alternative for students who do not work best sitting still.
Any materials that are used to help my students be more successful in the classroom will impact their lives for the better.
Students are empowered when they can control more aspects of their learning environment. In addition to providing my students with voice and choice, standing desks will promote my students' physical development and positive behavior while they are learning in my classroom.
