Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fifth grade is fabulous! Year after year, I have prepared the fifth grade students in my building for middle school. I teach in a wonderful school community in Southwest Detroit, where ninety percent of the students are Latino and one hundred percent receive free lunch. Eighty-five percent of my students learn English as a second language.
My students are expected to focus and concentrate more fiercely than the average fifth grader because many of them only speak English while in school.
This attention to focus can be exhausting for some students. Couple that with some sensory or other attention disruptions and maintaining your focus and engagement for the day can be difficult.
We are here to persevere! The students are wonderful and with a few additional supplies, they can and will succeed!
My Project
Inattention in students may lead to poor academic performance, poor behavior, and low self-esteem. A Stand-Up Desk will help to combat these issues that can occasionally occur in a regular classroom setting. Some students need a Stand-Up Desk to help them focus their extra energy, while others may need the Stand-Up Desk to help get their blood flowing and increase their energy to be able to concentrate.
The Stand-Up Desk will be used on a rotating basis in my classroom.
This will allow several students to benefit from the desk by increasing movement, improve focus, reduce behavior problems and improve test scores. The purpose of this desk will help to improve student engagement for all my students.
