Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher at PS 98M. This school is located in upper Manhattan in a largely Dominican neighborhood. Almost all of the children receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many come from single parent families who find it difficult to provide anything beyond basic supplies. They are also frequently unable to expose their children to the many museums and parks that New York City has to offer. I try to incorporate field trips that match our curriculum goals whenever possible. Keeping my students safe on these trips is a top concern. We travel by foot around the neighborhood and at times on the NYC subway. Keeping track of up to 30 children is a challenge even with the help of parent chaperones. I have tried nametags on strings (they tangle and pose a safety hazard), stick-on labels (they fall off), clip on buttons (they break) and class tee shirts (they are hidden by coats). I have come to the conclusion that the best way to "count heads" is to have the students wear bright neon colored caps. Using glitter glue we will decorate brightly colored caps with our school name and phone number. Wearing their creatively decorated hats the children will feel special and I will have peace of mind knowing I can take an accurate head count in a moment's notice. We will proudly "stand out in a crowd!"
