Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Provide us with role models who inspire greatness! The students in my classroom want to achieve and succeed, but the positive role models they have access to are limited. They need to know about the lives and struggles of great men and women, not pop culture and reality television stars.

Our school is in the heart of a large urban district.

We are one of the ten most underperforming schools in the city. The majority of my students receive free lunch and English is their second language. My students are hardworking young people who want to make a difference in the world. They lack positive role models who can inspire and provide them with a dream or show them hope is always a possibility.

My Project

I recently read my class the book, "Of Thee I Sing." I was surprised by the questions and interest this book piqued. My students long to know more about the lives of inspirational people like Dr. Martin Luther King, Cesar Chaves and Anne Frank. Using the book "Of Thee I Sing" as our launching point, I want to use the biographies I've requested for this project to launch us into a unit on character, possibilities, hopes and dreams. I want my students to stand on the shoulders of these great men and women to help them see a better future for themselves.

My students need to see themselves in the stories and the faces of the great men and women written about in the books I have selected for this project.

These books will introduce them to role models that have accomplished greatness and made real and lasting change, not reality television celebrities and pop culture icons.
