Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a first year teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, every day I provide my students with a safe, fun and loving environment where they are encouraged to do their best...which includes being able to move! My students are energetic five and six year olds who cannot sit still (and shouldn't have to!) While working they like to stand, sit on their knees, rock and kick their feet. We are constantly singing, dancing and learning through movement and these seating options will allow the students to move all day long.
My Project
My classroom is all about students making choices and being in control of their own learning. They make choices on what centers they go to, what jobs they will have for the week and what they would like to learn about. So that made me think...why can't my students make a choice about the seat that will help them focus and learn? Who decided that a five or six year old child learns best by sitting in a hard chair at a desk all day?
I find myself constantly saying "sit down" or "stop wiggling" and that shouldn't be the case, my students should have materials that allow them to move while working!
I have chosen 4 different types of seating for my students. With yoga balls, my students will be able to bounce and move while also being engaged in their learning activity. With lap desks and stability disks, my students will be able to choose an area in the room that best supports their ability to focus while working on any subject. With stools, the students will be able to spin and move while sitting. The wobble chairs will allow students to wiggle and rock while working at a table or desk. As you can see from the picture...my students need more options for seating other than a hard chair and table!
