My students need me to be able to have the option to stand when I have been sitting for too long. I will also allow students to use the desk as needed.

My Students

I work mostly with about 120 students who are at-risk of not graduating from high school. Our program uses a team approach to teaching students in each grade. We meet weekly and discuss any changes or concerns we have with the students. The students range from being homeless to being the child of a business owner. Each has a unique circumstance as to why they may be considered at-risk to not graduate. Many of these students have had some sort of childhood trauma and have a high "ACES" score. Each are looking for a safe, stable environment for 8 hours out of their day.

My Project

As a school social worker, I do a lot of work at my desk. There are many points in my day when I just can't sit anymore. This causes me to need to step away from my desk and not complete tasks such as reviewing transcripts and grades or finding resources for a family that has recently been evicted from their home. Many students prefer to come into my office and stand rather than sit; they sit most of the day as well. I would love to be able to work with them at a standing desk rather than them feeling as though they have to sit down.

A standing desk will also encourage students to ask questions as to why I would rather stand than sit.

I can use these times as a learning opportunity for students to understand how sitting can affect one's body in negative ways.
