Most of my kids in 8, 11, and 12 grade are English Language Learners, and I have a lot of kids with special needs. Most of my kids experienced violence, gang activity, homelessness or hunger. They are awesome kids, and I learn from them every day. They are eager to learn math, and a better infrastructure could help them a lot to improve their learning. Especially for my older kids who will be the first ones in their families to go to a college.
The desks in my classroom are old, and for some kids they are too small. In addition, some kids with special needs have trouble sitting still for the whole period. A standing desk would make a huge difference for them. Some days I have trouble keeping them seated for the long 90 minutes block periods. Standing desks would allow them to move around while doing their work. Also, I can flexibly adjust them to instruct them in small groups, or one on one. As our school does not offer so much sport, standing instead of sitting would be much appreciated by them.
