Help me give my students standing desks! My Special Ed students with hyperactivity and focusing challenges have a great desire to do well in the classroom and just need an alternative way to participate!
Hello! I am a Special Education teacher at an Elementary School. I teach students from grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. We live in a rural area surrounded by farm land. I have several students on my caseload that have difficulty focusing and sitting in their desks in the classroom. Several of them prefer to stand up while they work due to their inability to "sit still" in their desk. Standing helps them focus and reduces their fidgeting. I have wonderful co-workers who understand their need to stand and allow them to do this during direct instruction. However, this also means that they have to hunch over their desks when they have to write notes or copy something the teacher has written on the board! This greatly impacts their handwriting and ability to keep up with their notes.
I have talked with my students and it is amazing to me that they are able to articulate their behavioral challenges.
They recognize their needs to move around and we are able to brainstorm ideas of ways to support them in the classroom. This is where we came up with the idea of standing desks!
My Project
I have several students with ADHD and they have great difficulty sitting in their traditional seats during direct instruction. Several of them prefer to stand behind their desks but this makes it difficult for them to write notes. They are often hunched over their desks which hurts their backs. Their handwriting and ability to keep up with the teacher suffers as well!!
My students would love the opportunity to use a standing desk!
We already practice flex seating in several classrooms at our school and a standing desk will be one more way for us to differentiate and meet their individual needs. They truly have a desire to do well and participate in the classroom, they just need an alternative way of doing so!
