The students in our room are enrolled at an elementary school in Reno, Nevada. This is part of the state's second largest school district. The culture of our school is special and students maintain a high level of academic achievement and gain ample opportunities to work with the arts.
In our room, students work hard and strive to be on a path to college, career and civic readiness.
All students work with the Nevada Academic Content Standards and our room places a strong emphasis on complex and rigorous tasks.
My Project
We know that movement increases student engagement, enhances academic outcomes, and is healthier. Sadly, the standard desk has remained unchanged for 40 years and does not help kids get the movement they need and deserve.
By bringing standing desks into my room, we will bridge theory and practice and do what is best for students.
Great strides have been made in our classroom to increase movement and a standing desk, with a pendulum footrest, will continue our progressive effort to maximize different learning settings for the kids.
The average US students spends 4.5 hours sitting at school each day. Moreover, when combined with popular home activities, students spend 85% of their waking hours sitting. Although standing desks are not a panacea for this, it is certainly a step in the right direction.
