My Students

I teach in a public charter school in Washington, D.C. I teach an array of students from different backgrounds and different abilities. Even though that presents a daily challenge, I love that each and every one of them bring something--whether it's helping me in class, having a positive attitude when responding to feedback, or just being very resilient.

Some words I would use to describe my hundred students are: curious, excited, energetic, engaged, diverse, reflective, and thoughtful.

I want to really create the space for my students to grow, because their potential is astronomical.

My Project

Some of our students have ADHD or other challenges that prevent them from being focused at a seat for extended periods of time. The 6th grade team uses movement breaks and water breaks to account for this, but having a standing desk would enable students who have this challenge to remain at work for longer periods of time.

We've seen this work before by stacking a bunch of books on a student's desk so he could stand and do his work, but if we had these risers then it would be more structured.

Our students love to stand and move around, let's give them the opportunity to do that in an approved manner.
