Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am looking into a new ways to teach math skills and prepare my students for upcoming state mandatory math assessment. I teach second grade at a high poverty public school. Most of my second graders are Hispanic from non-English speaking low-income families. Many of my students have academic difficulties with calendar concepts, problem solving, operations, number patterns, number sentences, place value, money combinations, algebraic thinking, and mental math because they do not have enough practice at home.
As English Language Learners, they struggle with math standards. However, my students are eager to learn and have ambitions to succeed on a high stake CST test that they will take this year for the first time. They need more practice building the skills and confidence they need to succeed on standardized tests with activities that provide tons of focused practice! Second graders love group work! As a teacher, I want to provide activities that will help them to master important academic skills.
Elementary Calendar Math Center provides daily practice with a variety of essential math skills in one complete center! Students can simply choose a different activity each day to provide targeted practice with important math skills—from solving word problems and working out number sentences to exploring number patterns and creating money combinations! Guess my number pocket chart kit is a great way to start the day and build math skills in groups and with the whole class! Students solve each riddle by working through the math clues then pull back the slider to reveal the correct answer! Kit covers everything from place value and money to addition and multiplication. To keep students focused and organized our math centers will need timers to allow students finish one activity and move to the other. I want to have these materials available to them, and hope to see how working as a team of learners will bring up their self-esteem and confidence to achieve goals they set for themselves.
If this proposal is funded, our students will be given an opportunity to get focused practice in the key academic math standards. I want them to be excited about building academic skills as they follow along with interesting activities. Your support will directly improve my students' chances for success. If you choose to fund this project, my second grade students will benefit from your generosity for many years to come. Thank you in advance!
