My students want to be themselves and be loved for it. My students excel when they first, and foremost, feel like they can be themselves, and still be part of the class community. This happens when a student feels safe and respected and is provided the opportunities to engage in classroom activities that suit him/her as a learner. A student told me that she never liked math, but learned so much in my class because she felt supported and cared for.
My Project
In my math classroom lessons, students are working in groups to use their collective prior knowledge to solve problems and develop a conceptual understanding of how a new problem is solved. They will be able to collaborate in seated groups on my available floor space, seated at groups of desks, or standing around a high-top table. The flexible seating helps students feel comfortable and confident. Students at the table may also be standing on balance discs. My students will learn more from solving problems among themselves than they will from direct instruction. The tables give me that collaborative workspace.
