Our first grade classroom is made up of many different personalities and needs who are all there to support one another in their learning. We are made up of a vast variety of backgrounds, and over 75% of the students are from low-income families. Many of our students are unique learners and need to be taught in a variety of ways due to their disabilities. The majority of the students also have health issues they cope with day in and day out. Even with all this, these six and seven year olds come in daily eager to learn and succeed.
These kind, loving, and motivated students deserve a learning environment that matches their personalities and needs.
This is the first year I am back in the classroom after being a reading specialist for the past 13 years. When I took over the classroom, I knew this community of learners needed flexible seating to be successful. After implementing some flexible seating on my own, the students proved they need more options to match their learning needs.
My Project
Flexible seating is more popular in classrooms. There's a reason for it. Year after year I have more students who prefer to stand while working. Standing tables offer students a comfortable way for these students to work.
Many of my students will stand and lean over their tables because they simply can't sit while working.
Allowing students to stand and exert energy actually helps certain students focus on their learning. Since so many of the children come from struggling backgrounds and situations, I wish to provide them with all the tools possible for them to be successful.
The two standing tables will be a fantastic addition to the other flexible seating that's already in place. We have several pods around the room such as ball chairs, wobble seats, balance pillows, and crates. The standing tables will fill a void for students who need it.
