Students need options in their education, and in my classroom, those options are limited. I want to be able to provide my students the option of standing or sitting in class, while still keeping a comfortable classroom climate.
My students are a blended group of races, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds, who work hard through out the school year to become better citizens and contributors to our community.
In our traditional school, I have brought with me many less-than-traditional methods of teaching, including most recently stability balls for my students to replace their desk chairs with, and the results have been nothing less than outstanding. My students are constantly changing, so I am constantly working on staying up-to-date with the latest studies and methods to help my students grow in every way that they can.
My Project
Studies prove that a more active body will lead to a more active mind. I have put these theories to practice with stability balls replacing my students' desk chairs, and the results thus far have been incredible. In recent articles, I have seen teachers allowing students the opportunity to stand during lessons, using portable lecterns, or stands, for the student to use instead of their desk. Allowing students to option to stand temporarily during a lesson promotes blood flow through out the body, which provides the brain with more oxygen and encourages the brain to work more efficiently. Providing my students with several lecterns to place toward the back of my classroom would give my students the opportunity to "wake up" their brains, while still being able to stay with the lesson and not disrupt others around them.
Based on research, my students would greatly benefit from this added option in their learning environment.
My students deserve the opportunity to learn the best way that they can, and I want to be able to provide them as many options as possible to promote their success.
