My Students

I teach Spanish to a group of inquisitive, active high schoolers who love to get up and move. Traditional classrooms set-ups are designed for students to sit quietly, work on tasks individually, and do not encourage the type of collaboration needed for today's 21st-century learner. Especially in a language classroom, engagement and attention are critical; having a flexible classroom design that easily allows for student discourse would greatly increase my students' productivity levels and attention spans.

My students are full of energy and love every opportunity given to them to be able to move around and feel comfortable in their environment.

The skills students learn in the Spanish classroom will help them to better navigate our increasingly interconnected world and contribute to their communities.

My Project

Standing desks will allow more flexibility for students to engage with their peers. Students will be able to easily and confidently lead classroom discussions, work in collaborative groups, hone their interpersonal skills, and, when necessary, stay motivated. Standing desks can also help to make routine tasks, such as editing and revising essays, feel exciting and challenging.

My students will greatly benefit from classroom opportunities that promote student engagement.

Currently, many of my students come to me tired after long nights of homework, babysitting, and working their after-school jobs late into the evening. They find it difficult to stay awake the next morning, as their current seating situations do not allow them to get up and move around easily. Additionally, some of my students have ADHD and find it difficult to stay seated for 45 minutes, where movement is restricted. My students need to connect with the world to better understand it, and the first step in this process is to connect with their classmates in a manner that is productive and engaging. By allowing students a variety of seating/standing options, they can more easily build positive peer and student-to-teacher relationships because they will spend more time on task and collaborating.
