My Students

Where is North America? Where is California? I don't know, we don't have a globe or a map! First graders are just beginning to understand about the continents and locate the different states, but it is very difficult in a classroom that does not have any large maps or a globe.

My students are a very active group of first graders.

Like many students, they have a difficult time staying focused on what they need to be learning. They are very interested in learning, as long as they can be up and moving. We live in a very rural community in South Dakota. We are a small school of only around 200 students Preschool through Twelfth grade. Along with many other schools, we are facing many budget cuts and without donors like you, this would not be possible!

My Project

In first grade, we do a lot of talking about different states, and we do an exchange with other first grades across the United States, to help us learn about other states. By having a large carpet with a map of the United States in our classroom, we will be able to physically move our bodies to locate the different states.

First grade students learn by doing, and by having a map of the United States carpet, inflatable globe and community Lego people, we will be able learn about our communities, country, and world by doing!
