This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although we are not quite there, thanks to the Donor's Choose program, my students have just begun to experience a well-rounded music program. The biggest challenge we have is obtaining the funds necessary to complete some of the projects that we have started.
As a Title 1 school, the majority of my students are in the free or reduced price lunch program.
Although my classes are filled with bright and creative students, we simply don't have the financial or even parental support we need to have a really successful music program. As with many schools today, the performing arts programs are the first ones to receive budget cuts. We have not been the exception. Any funds that our school receives is often redirected to more "important" areas.
My Project
Presently, as my students use instruments in my class, their music has to be placed on their desk, or projected onto the SMART Board screen. My students need music stands to hold their music while they're playing an instrument. Posture is extremely important in any music classroom, and when students don't have the music in front of them, it creates all kinds of problems.
New music stands will help my students become better musicians and music students overall.
They will also enable me to work with small groups of students on a more personal basis and provide a more appropriate environment for rehearsals and performances.
