Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse mix of energetic, intelligent, and curious 9 and 10-year-olds who need resources to truly excel! My school is an urban, high-poverty school that strives to do what's best for the kids, but we often don't have the budget for the "extras" (basic supplies, books, technology, field trips, etc.) that can make a significant positive impact on student learning and growth. Many of my students have had traumatic backgrounds, have learned English as a second language (ESL), or have families that struggle to simply put food on the table. Despite these challenges, they thrive when presented with the opportunity to do so.
My intention is to work each and every day to help close the "opportunity gap" facing the wonderful students in my classroom!
My Project
I have started to implement flexible seating in the classroom, and my students absolutely love having a choice of where and how to work on their assignments. One of the very favorite options is the stand up desk and stool seat that we have. The students are begging for more!
Instead of always hearing the words, "Sit down at your desk" in school, how would you have liked to hear the words, "Choose where you'll be most effective today?"
That is exactly the kind of classroom that I am striving to create.
This stool will be the seating option for the stand up desk that we received as Part 2 of my flexible seating project. The stool is adjustable in height so it can be set at the perfect height for the student who is at the desk. I strongly believe in providing flexible seating options for my students who learn best through kinetic activity and need to be moving in order to absorb what is being taught. Studies have shown that children learn best and perform better when movement is incorporated in their learning. This stool for our stand up desk will allow students to be mobile, to be able to fidget, to be able to concentrate in their own special way.
