My Special Education program is called Positive Behavior Intervention (PBI). I serve a variety of students with special needs. They are in grades 6, 7, and 8. These special needs include, but are not limited to: ADD/ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorder, Autism(ASD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Depression, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, General Communication Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder and Anxiety Disorder. Students in this program tend to have difficulties with peer relations, understanding personal boundaries, completing school tasks, understanding their role in conflict, and even simply making and keeping friendships.
My students are creative, clever and spontaneous!
Allowing them to have access to a variety of things in the classroom is important. Being able to work in a desk or standing up but still having a solid writing surface is important.
My Project
My project will provide students with ADHD and other disabilities an opportunity to stand during lessons. These standing height desks give students the opportunity to stand but still have a hard surface to complete their work. Having a different perspective or a change in scenery can be helpful for learning. Students who need to burn off energy can utilize these desks and still be able to learn.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by reducing the amount of behavior issues, because I will be able to provide the appropriate stimulation my students need, but often struggle to voice their needs, due to their disability.
Very few of our school's classrooms have standing desks so I would like to show our school how effective standing desks can be in assisting students. The standing height chairs will also allow them to sit at these taller desks if they are needing to sit during the lesson.
