Help me give my students flexible seating. I find that many of my students need to get up and move around during class. These stand-up desks would allow students the flexibility to stand up while still working.
My students are from Alexandria, Virginia, a close-in suburb to DC. Our district is one of the most diverse student populations in the country, with over 15,000 students who hail from more than 118 countries and speak 120 languages. We are diverse socio-economically as well with approximately 66% of students coming from economically disadvantaged households.
The diversity of our city, district, & school is truly what makes a great learning environment.
Our school is authorized for the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and is a recognized IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The IB programs focus on developing the whole child so that they gain the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills needed to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world.
My Project
I would like to allow students the flexibility to stand while they are working on class material. Unfortunately, students are asked to sit during a large portion of their day and many need to move around more often. If students are able to get out some of their physical energy by standing up, they can focus their mental energy on the material we are working on in class.
Stand-up desks will allow them to continue working while still completing class assignments.
Having two will still allow students to collaborate while working in pairs. These desks will make for a productive classroom and provide students with the flexibility they need to get their work done in a setting that supports them and their needs.
