Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of wonderful 3rd graders who have learning differences in reading, writing, math, and social skills. My students are with me from one hour per day up to almost a full day, depending on their individual learning needs. They learn best with a multi-sensory curriculum with lots of hands-on learning, including technology. They also like to sing and they are very creative thinkers. Their favorite class song that motivates them to try their best is “Firework” by Katy Perry.
My Project
Several of my students struggle with staying focused and need movement or sensory stimulation to maintain their attention so that they can learn. They are allowed to chew gum, hold and squeeze a “squishy” fidget, run their hands through water beads, and sit in wiggle chairs which allows them to move and wiggle while they learn.
They wish they could have a standing desk that they could take turns using when they need a break from sitting.
A standing desk would be a great tool in my classroom for my students who are more active and fidgety. Studies show that students who need movement are up to 25% more engaged when using a standing desk. Please help them make their wish a reality.
