Help me give my students a standing desk and bar stools to make them feel more at home while learning about financial literacy and making wise financial decisions.
Our school is a Title I school where we try to "outside the box" to provide the always-changing resources needed to coordinate with the current educational standards, and also provide for student creativity.
I am fortunate enough to be teaching a great group of creative, technologically driven, sixth graders.
They work hard and they are eager to explore, discover and learn.
This group of students comes from a small, rural school that houses less than 300 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Most of the students come from low-income and low socioeconomic status homes. Our school struggles to provide funding for educational needs, let alone extracurricular activities.
My Project
According to Charles Schwab, "Financial literacy can mean the difference between opportunity and adversity. Financial literacy can open doors to an education and a career. An investment in financial literacy is an investment in each other and ourselves," and "It's a powerful tool for social justice that can arm people of all economic backgrounds with the knowledge, skill, and training they need to thrive in an increasingly complicated and competitive world.
These tables and chairs would make our classroom the perfect learning environment for all types of learning, while simulating a real world experience.
Each year my students plan field trips to ancient civilization archeological sites by producing an itinerary based on a strict budget. They are amazed at how the lack of finances affect their choice of transportation, lodging, and "mad" money. Some students choose to fly first class, but can not plan "sightseeing", while others choose to drive and visit many places. This project a big hit and an experience every student should have. They learn that by being diligent with their finances, they can improve their financial future.
The adjustable height desks, and stools will allow students to participate in class discussions, work together to discuss the impact of their financial decisions.
