My students need music stands to properly hold their music. Without quality working stands students play with poor posture and risk developing bad playing habits.
Have you ever tried to write a paper on your knee or take a test on a chair? It can be very difficult to get anything done in school without a desk. Well music stands are the desks of band class!
My students are very dedicated to making music despite the challenges of the inner city.
My students work hard every day to better themselves and the community through making music. The program consists of over 70 students and many come from very low income homes. While the students come from an area with very little, their academics and test scores are rising at an incredible rate. This has created an overall feeling of excellence that has seeped into all aspects of the school, including this band. My students are very dedicated to proving achievement doesn't have to be tied to location.
My Project
By getting twelve more high quality music stands we can make sure at least 24 more students in any class have a workstation. It is nearly impossible to have more than two students to a stand. Because we have so few, as many as four students are reading off the same stand! This would be like four high school students sharing a single desk. No one would have room to work! These high quality stands will last many years and make sure that students have ample room to work and grow.
While our band department budget remains at $0, my enrollment keeps growing as students become more and more involved in music.
We work diligently to raise money through working with community groups but still struggle to support the cost of a band this large. While it becomes more difficult to supply for these students, they remind me why the work is worth it by cheering "I love band" six times at the end of every rehearsal!
