I have a wonderful group of 4th and 5th-grade students that always come to school with a smile on their face. My students are all special needs students, with cognitive impairments. My students are culturally and ethnically diverse. All of my students are Title 1 students and come from poverty. Most of my students do not have the opportunity to engage in enrichment activities, such as visiting parks and museums, attending plays and concerts, and engaging in art and cooking.
My students find the traditional set-up of lecture, worksheets and workbooks difficult and mononotonous.
My students thrive with hands-on, interesting, meaningful activities. Connecting learning to real-life experiences is a must for my students. When my students finally understand a new concept they are so excited and their whole face lights up. It is a rewarding experience to see my students engaged in learning and making meaningful connections.
My Project
My students have begun to use flexible seating in the classroom, they have access to wiggle stools, a carpet, and seat cushions. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Flexible seating allows my students to stay focused and engaged during independent work time, and decreases work fatigue. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating.
By donating to this project you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement, through additional alternate seating options.
